Lilies

If I did not have a calendar, I would still know it was August because the very earth seems to sing with the whirring, buzzing and trilling of insects hidden in the grass, flowers and trees. They thrive in the heat, and I do not. I feel almost as cooped up as I do in winter. The stress can build while I wait for the heat to break, and the sky to clear to a rich deep blue that tells me Autumn in on the way. Right about when I think I will be impossibly grumpy, something beautiful comes along to dazzle me, and this week it was lilies. They were stunningly beautiful and chased every dull thought and dark mood away. I took many pictures, passionately snapping while volunteers appeared at the right moment to hold them for me. They were not my lilies, I thank Pam for her wonderful gift, and I share them with you so that you can appreciate this gift of August. A great teacher once told me that whatever we focus our thoughts upon will increase in our lives, and I thank the lilies for reminding me to focus on peace and beauty.

Peace Waiting in the Wings

Your Lily photo is exquisite, Carol. Lilies are an inspiration. I love their graceful flowing leaves before the bloom as well. I have always pondered the “great design” that called for a Daylily's life of just one day.
We do mark our country year by what is blooming in the dooryard. I wait all year for the shower of white star flowers that spill over the Clematis Paniculata vine on a trellis attached to the house. It grows beside a Burning Bush that so stunningly marks the fall.
I agree that these momentary pleasures of the natural world spirit away the hurts and light up the darkness. Peace is illusive but always waiting in the wings.
